There is a growing demand for highly skilled, motivated labour force for
the expanding aquaculture sector, in Canada and globally.The Marine Institute of Memorial University is now accepting
applications for September 2003 admission for the Advanced Diploma in
Aquaculture. This is a post-graduate, one year applied program aimed at
recent university / technical college graduates seeking to pursue a
career in aquaculture.
Well over 40 occupations exist in aquaculture however some of the more
prevalent career streams include: fish farm management, fish and
shellfish health technology, environmental technology, feed
management technology, production management, aquaculture
engineering, aquaculture technology, aquaculture research (leading to
MSc and / or PhD), aquaculture instruction, and work on aquaculture
projects in both developing and developed countries. The Advanced
Diploma in Aquaculture will prepare students for rewarding careers in all
aspects of aquaculture.
BACKGROUND
Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector worldwide
(FAO), contributing nearly 25% of total Canadian aquatic food production
in 2002 and valued over $1 billion to the national economy. About 14,000
people currently work directly and indirectly in the industry and allied
sectors. There is a huge demand for leaders and managers in the
industry, which is expected to double over the next decade.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
One year program, combining classroom and practical experience.
Topics include site evaluation (including detailed tour of several
aquaculture businesses in first month of program), business
management and communications, marketing, economics, aquaculture
systems operations, fish health, fish nutrition, aquaculture engineering,
fish and shellfish culture, seafood handling and processing, and
practical aquaculture (boat handdling, net mending, etc). Students
complete an applied research project in semester 2 and undertake a
3-month workterm placement in their final semester.
FACILITIES
State-of-the-art flowthrough and recirculating freshwater and saltwater
rearing facilities are available for teaching and research purposes at
various locations throughout Memorial University, including the Marine
Institute, Ocean Sciences Center, and Main Campus. As well, analytical
capabilities for fish health, quarantine labs (GLP), food chemistry, and
so on are available for student useage.
